Srinagar, Mar 24 (KNO): The Government of India (GoI) on Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that a Cabinet Sub-Committee has been constituted in Jammu and Kashmir to examine and review issues related to the rationalisation of reservation policy in the Union Territory. The information was provided in response to an unstarred question raised by Member of Parliament Syed Agha Ruhullah Mehdi. Replying to the query, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that the UT government has already set up a panel to look into various aspects of the reservation framework. He added that the committee has submitted its report to the Council of Ministers. Regarding concerns over the disproportionate impact of the existing reservation structure on the open category, the minister said that no such representation has been received by the department so far. The query had also sought details on whether reservation policies in J&K are subject to periodic review in line with constitutional principles laid down by the Supreme Court, and the steps taken to ensure that reservation remains a tool for social justice without causing long-term imbalance in education and employment—(KNO)
